Teeth have two anatomical segments;
the root which holds the whole tooth in the gum and bone, and the
crown which is the part of the tooth that we can see, feel and chew
with.

Sometimes,
the crown of the tooth can be so heavily filled or damaged that
it needs to be replaced by an artificial crown. This is accomplished
by very accurate shaping of the existing crown and fillings after
which an impression is taken and an artificial crown, matching the
natural tooth in every way, is constructed by a specialist dental
technician.
When
the dentist and patient are happy with the fit and appearance of
the crown it is carefully cemented onto the prepared root stump
and becomes a very useful and attractive replacement that will last
for many years.
